Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP Announces Academic Affiliation with Constitutional Law Scholar Eugene Volokh

19 January, 2006, Los Angeles - The international law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP is pleased to announce that Eugene Volokh, who holds the Gary T. Schwartz chair at the UCLA School of Law, has joined the firm's litigation practice as an academic affiliate. Volokh, who will continue to teach at UCLA, is nationally recognized in multiple areas of the law, including cyberspace law, First Amendment law, copyright law, workplace harassment law, and right of publicity law.

"Professor Volokh is one of the top constitutional scholars in the U.S.," said Louis Eatman, partner-in-charge of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's Los Angeles office. "We expect that his knowledge and creativity will be an asset to our entire litigation practice, both in Los Angeles and nationally. In particular, Professor Volokh will be a significant addition to the firm's national appellate practice."

Volokh has written textbooks on First Amendment law, Religion Clauses law, and academic legal writing; 50 law review articles; and more than 75 op-eds in such venues as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. He is also the founder and the coauthor of The Volokh Conspiracy (http://volokh.com), one of the first and most respected Weblogs on legal topics.

"Professor Volokh's deep and lively understanding of the intersection of constitutional law with business and technology will further enhance the strategic legal advice we provide our clients," said Donald Falk, an appellate litigation partner based in the firm's Palo Alto office. "As our clients' interests have become more global, we see it as crucial to seek relationships with the highest level of legal talent wherever it may be found. Professor Volokh adds another bright light to our nationally recognized appellate practice, the members of which have collectively argued over 190 cases in the Supreme Court and include former deputy solicitors general Andrew Frey, Kenneth Geller, Philip Lacovara, and Stephen Shapiro, and numerous other experienced appellate advocates."

Shapiro, the founding member of Mayer Brown's appellate practice, added that "Professor Volokh is part of a rich tradition of leading academics affiliating with Mayer Brown, joining such legal giants as the late Paul Bator, now-Tenth Circuit Judge Michael McConnell, Harvard Law School Professor Arthur Miller, now-Stanford Law School Dean Larry Kramer, Northwestern Law School Professor Martin Redish, and Vanderbilt Law School Professor John Goldberg."

Prior to teaching at UCLA, Volokh clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Volokh also worked for 12 years as a computer programmer, and is still partner in a small software company that sells software which he wrote. He graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in math-computer science at age 15, and has written many articles on computer software.

Professor Volokh is a member of the American Law Institute; has been selected as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California by the L.A./S.F. Daily Journal (2005) and one of the Top 20 Legal Thinkers in America in a Legal Affairs magazine online poll (2005); has received the Freedom of Information Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, Los Angeles Chapter (2003); was listed #3 on the list of the 50 Most Cited Faculty Who Entered Teaching Since 1992 (2002); and has received the Paul Bator Award from the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy (1999).

Mayer Brown's appellate practice is the oldest and largest in the nation, with over 30 partners, counsel, and academic affiliates spread among six of the firm's domestic offices (Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, and Washington, D.C.). Its Los Angeles office was established in 1985 and currently has more than 71 lawyers engaged in its Banking and Finance; Bankruptcy; Corporate and Securities; Government; Environmental; Litigation; Real Estate; and Tax practice groups. With over 1,400 lawyers worldwide, Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP represents many of the world's largest commercial, industrial, high tech, professional service, and financial companies and institutions, as well as a number of national governments and multi-national organizations.
