Southern Center for Human Rights Honors Mayer Brown For Guantanamo Work

Mayer Brown is a co-recipient of the Southern Center for Human Rights 2007 Frederick Douglass Human Rights Award. The award was presented by Virginia Sloan, president of the Constitution Project, at SCHR's 2007 Awards Dinner, held November 1, in Washington DC. The award honors those "public interest organizations, military lawyers, and private law firms courageously defending the fundamental human rights of persons detained at Guantanamo Bay."

Since the fall of 2003, attorneys from the Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. offices have worked extensively on litigation challenging the U.S. Government's detention of alleged "enemy combatants" at Guantánamo Bay Naval Base and elsewhere. In addition to counsel Gary Isaac, who accepted the award on behalf of the firm, those involved in the litigation on behalf of Mayer Brown have included senior counsel Philip Lacovara, partners Robert Helman, Andrew Pincus, James Schroeder, Adrian Steel, and Jeffrey Strauss, associates Emilie Beavers, Jeffrey Berger, Catherine Bernard, Steve Kane, Heather Lewis, Lauren Frank Noll, Liz Oyer, Andrew Schaefer, Matthew Sostrin, and Andrew Tauber, and paralegal Steve Wells.
