Edward S. Best, who was named an All-Star for the second consecutive year, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading capital markets attorneys, with a particular emphasis on securities offerings by financial institutions and cross-border offerings. He joined Mayer Brown in 1986 and is co-leader of the firm’s Capital Markets and Financial Institutions groups. Best also is active in the areas of mergers and acquisitions law and general corporate practice. He received a J.D. cum laude from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law and an A.B. from the University of Illinois.
Richard W. Shepro’s practice emphasizes sophisticated international and domestic business transactions, advice to financial institutions and solutions to complex and novel problems. He is widely recognized for his nuanced approach to the negotiation and structuring of cross-border acquisitions and other transactional matters. Shepro joined Mayer Brown in 1981 and was co-head of the Corporate & Securities practice from 1997-2005. He holds a J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard University.
Frederick B. Thomas returns to the Client Service All-Star team, having also been selected in 2006. He represents US, foreign and multinational corporations and other entities, both public and private, in transactions and related corporate and securities law matters. He also advises on corporate governance, securities and other matters. Thomas joined Mayer Brown in 1975 and is the Partner in Charge of the Chicago office. He has been a member of the firm’s management committee since 1997. Thomas received a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and an A.B. magna cum laude from Dartmouth College.
Stephen M. Shapiro is the founder and senior member of Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court & Appellate practice, the largest and most esteemed such practice in the country. A former US Deputy Solicitor General, he has argued 29 cases before the US Supreme Court, including the landmark Stoneridge case, which the Wall Street Journal described as “the biggest securities-litigation court clash in a generation.” He also co-authored Supreme Court Practice (2007), the standard treatise on litigation before the Supreme Court. Shapiro joined Mayer Brown in 1972 and holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. magna cum laude from Yale University.
