Steve Sanders has briefed cases and issues to
the 4th, 7th, and 8th Circuit U.S. Courts of Appeals, the Illinois and Michigan
Supreme Courts, and various federal district courts, and has argued in the 7th
and 8th Circuits. His appellate experience includes matters involving federal
and appellate jurisdiction, federal civil rights claims under 42 U.S.C. Sec.
1983, the federal telecommunications act, bankruptcy, state constitutional law,
leveraged leasing transactions, white collar crime, and choice of law in class
actions.
In pro bono practice, Steve is counsel to 24 law
professors as amici curiae in National Pride at Work v. Granholm,
a case in the Michigan Supreme Court on whether public-employer domestic partner
benefits violate the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. He is
also counsel to 15 law and history professors as amici in Varnum v.
Brien, a case in the Iowa Supreme Court challenging the state's prohibition
on same-sex marriage.
Steve received his B.A. in Political Science and
Journalism from Indiana University, and his J.D. magna cum laude from the
University of Michigan Law School, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif
and received the Bates Memorial Scholarship, the law school's highest award to
graduating seniors. While at Michigan, Steve was an articles editor for the
Michigan Law Review, and won prizes for Best Brief and Best Oral Advocate in
Michigan's Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition. Following law school, he
clerked at the 7th Circuit for the Hon. Terence T. Evans. Before law school,
Steve worked for 15 years in higher education administration at Indiana
University.
