Charles Rothfeld has been recognized by the National Law Journal as “one of the leading members of the Supreme Court bar” and identified as a leading appellate lawyer by Chambers USA (2014), which quoted client descriptions of him as a “genius.” He has worked on more than 200 cases before the US Supreme Court, arguing 31 of them, and has handled hundreds of additional cases before the federal and state appellate courts, arguing in virtually every federal appellate circuit. In addition, Charles is a founder and co-director of the Yale Law School Supreme Court Clinic, one of the country’s most successful appellate advocacy programs. Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Charles clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun and served as an assistant to the Solicitor General in the US Justice Department, where he had primary responsibility for handling the federal government’s Supreme Court litigation in the areas of banking and securities regulation. He has published widely on the Supreme Court, the Constitution, and appellate advocacy.
