Freshwater v. Mt. Vernon City School District Board of Education (Ohio)
John Freshwater was a science teacher in a public middle school who was fired for teaching creationism and for refusing to remove religious displays from his classroom when told to do so. He challenged his termination up to the Ohio Supreme Court, arguing that the school violated his First Amendment rights. On behalf of a coalition of civil-rights groups, we filed an amicus brief successfully arguing that public-school teachers have no right to teach their religious views in a science classroom and that the school had an obligation to put a stop to Freshwater’s repeated violations of the Establishment Clause.
